What is SEO Copywriting?

SEO Copywriting is the technique of writing the viewable text on a web page in such a way that it reads well for the surfer, and also targets specific search terms. Its purpose is to rank highly in the search engines for the targeted search terms.
As well as the viewable text, SEO Copywriting usually optimizes other on-page elements for the targeted search terms. These include the Title, Description and Keywords tags, headings and alt text.
The idea behind SEO Copywriting is that search engines want genuine content pages and not additional pages (often called "doorway pages") that are created for the sole purpose of achieving high rankings

On Page SEO

On page SEO refers to using your keywords and keyphrases in the actual content and meta tags on your web page. Here are a list of the on page places you should carefully position your SEO Keywords.
  • The title meta tag. The <title> tag for your page is contained in the <head> section of your webpage appears in the tab area or window title area of your browser when you open a webpage. This is also the title used in search engine results pages for your webpage. This is probably the most important place to enter your keywords and keyphrases.

An example of this using the Dreamweaver tutorial illustration from a previous example might be giving the title tag for your home page the title of "Welcome - Dreamweaver Tutorials" and the About page - "About Dreamweaver Templates". Here is the proper format for your title tag:

    <title>Welcome - Dreamweaver Tutorials</title>
  • The description meta tag. Your site visitors will never see the description of your website, but this is a very important part of a page for search engines. The description meta tag should be in the <head> section of your webpage. The description meta tag information will also be displayed in the search enginie results pages under the title for your page. Here is an example of the description metatag:

<meta name="description" content="Learn everthing you need to know about web design with our Dreamweaver Tutorials" />
  • The keywords meta tag. The importance of this meta tag has been reduced greatly over the years but it is still worth while place to position your keywords. The keyword meta tag should also be positioned in the <head> section of your webpage. Your keywords and keyphrases should be separated with commas. Here is the format the tag should take:

<meta name="keywords" content="Dreamweaver Tutorial, Dreamweaver Training, Learn Dreamweaver, Dreamweaver Class" />
  • The Heading tags. Your keywords should be positioned in your heading tags - <h1>, <h2>, etc. Every page should have a single <h1> tag with your keywords and no more. This is a leading indicator for search engines to understand the content of your pages. You can have as many lower level heading tags are you need and these should also be populated with your keywords.
  • The "Alt" attribute text description for your images. Every image on your page should have an alt attribute and this should both describe the image as well as contain your keywords and keyphrases. Here is an example of correctly using an alt tag on an image:

    <img src="image.jpg" alt="Dreamweaver Tutorial">
  • The anchor text of your links. This is the actual text that a visitor would click on. Here is an example of correctly using anchor text:

    <a href="index.html">Welcome To Dreamweaver Tutorials</a>

Never use something like "Click Here" or "Read More" as the anchor text for your link
  • The title attribute for your links. Every link on your page should have the title attribute added to it. This is a fuller description of the destination of the link. Here is an example of using the title attribute on your links:

    <a href="index.html" title="Dreamweaver Tutorials Home Page">Welcome To Dreamweaver Tutorials</a>
  • The actual content of your webpage. This should happen relatively easily or even naturally. But it is important to consciously include your keywords in your content. If it makes sense in the context of your webpage, using the <strong> tag around your keywords to add weight to their value.
All of these uses have been in the content of your webpage. It is also important to use your keywords in directory and page names and your domain name if possible

Off Page SEO

Off Page SEO is the process of building links and connected pages to your website. This can be divided into two major areas: Social Media Pages and Link Building

Social Media Pages

You should have a presence on as many social media sites as you can effectively maintain. It doesn't do any good just to create the pages - they need to be actively maintained. An abandoned social media site can project a negative impression on your site to both search engines and actual visitors that may assume your site is not current or active.
On your social media pages you can place links to your content along with keywords and phrases in the page desciption and content on the page.
Here are a list of primary social media sites you should consider for SEO:
  • Facebook - the King of social meda. Use the name of your Facebook page along with the notes app to place SEO content. You can place your specials or other marketing opportunities in the Events section.
  • Twitter - Great for posting short and simple updates to your clients and customers.
  • Youtube - Video marketing and advertising has increased in importance since Google began placing videos directly into their main search engine results page.
  • Google Plus - A growing social media community similar to Facebook. If it we'ren't for the fact that this network is owned by Google it probably wouldn't be worth your time. But it is owned by Google so it demands everyones attention
  • Linkedin - Pro accoutns cost a monthly fee, but the free basic accounts will give you a place to create links to your website as well as list your interests and expertise.
  • Stumble Upon - A social media search engine similar to Digg. This is growing in popularity even though it has been around for a long time. The decline of Digg has increased the traffic to this site.
  • Pinterest - for visual content.
Again remember if you create a page, keep it up to date.

SEO Link Building

SEO Link Building is the primary way websites build their off page SEO stratagies on. Unfortunately the process of SEO link building is time consuming and often frustrating. There are several ways to develop off page links to your site and many SEO services that can assist you with this processes.

Link Farm Scams

Here is a hard fact that many people learn the expensive way. Most SEO companies that do "link building" are scams. Complete and total scams and even worse than the waste of money they represent, sometimes the links they actually build for you have a negative effect on your search engine rankings. This is because Google and other search engines have identified patterns around these scam companies, know what their links look like and either don't count them or penalize your site because of them.
Probably the most common scam companies offering link building use is link farming. This is the process of creating sites with no real content or value but are just collections of links to other sites. Link farms are a huge negative for Google and other search engines and they are constantly watching to find them and remove them from their listings. Often times link farms start off as regular sites that search engines will index and may even gain a decent Google page rank. But then they are turned into link farms and eventually they are discovered and removed from the search engines.
This type of link building is what most "SEO companies" do. You can tell a link farm SEO company by simply looking at their services. Any company offering "gauranteed links" or something like "500 links for $50" are probably link farm scams. They offer their services under a variety of names but it always boils down to some many links for so much money.
A good rule of thumb is if it seems to good to be true it probably is.

Legitimate Link Building Services

Legitimate Link Building SEO Services do exist and it is entirely possible for you to do your own SEO link building. There is no magic to link building, it just takes knowledge, time and determination. This SEO guide will provide you the knowledge, you need to provide the determination and time (or hire a reputable SEO service company to provide this service to you). Here are some primary ways of SEO Link Building:

Article Marketing

This is a very simple process, but time consuming. Write articles about your websites focus, include your keywords in the article and links to your site and then submit the article to article directories. Article directories are places blog and site owners go to get content for their websites, so if you're article is interesting, topical and well written it may be included on other sites as well. However there is not garantee that the site that republishes your content will include your information and links. The primary benefit here is that reputable article directories are regularly indexed by Google and other search engines and will picup the link to your site..
Some websites have an easier time article marketing than others do. Information based sites will have the easiest time with SEO Article Marketing because you simply need to write articles about the topic you are spreading information on. For other websites, you may need to get more creative. If you're company is focused around selling products, try writing information about your products - reviews and comparision articles work very well here. Also you have probably noticed many sites use "Top Ten" lists to attract readers. For example you could write an article on the top ten digital cameras if your website sells digital cameras.
For websites that market services you may need to get even more creative. For example if you are an air conditioning company, you might write articles on how to maintain air conditioners, how to tell if your air conditioner needs servicing, etc. The key for all of these is that the articles should be useful and well written. If you don't have the time or experience to write articles. is a great place to find writers that are experienced in SEO Article Marketing.
Once you have your article written its time to submit the article to different sites

Social Media Link Building

This is an area you need to be very careful about using outside SEO services. Often times SEO companies that do social media link building are just creating social profiles for the purpose of creating places to post links. This type of social media marketing will not do you any good and could be harmful to your SEO efforts.
What you're looking for in Social Media link building are links on pages that are maintained by real people. Running contests and promotions revolving around having your existing client base post information on their social media profiles is a great way to get people to spread information and links about your products, information and services to their friends, family and associates

One of the greatest temptation in search engine optimization is to over use your keywords and keyphrases. This is called Keyword spam or Keyword stuffing.
Most of us have probably at one point seen a site that is just collections of keywords and keyphtrases without any real content other than advertising. This type of site has been a burden to searchers ana search engines since they came into existence. It used to be easy to fool different search engines into thinking a spam site was a real site but ever since Google decided to try and deal with the problem spam websites while not eliminated have been cut way back.
Google and other search engines are now very good at understanding what natural language should look like on a page. They evaluate pages based on this knowledge and are able to better weed out spam sites from real sites with real content.
This is important to understand because if you overuse your keywords and keyphrases by stuffing them in everywhere possible, you run the risk on being penalized by search engines. This is especially true for newly registered domains and domains with few quality backlinks to them.
There are just a few simple rules to follow to make sure you don't get into trouble here
  • Write for human beings not search engines. Write naturally and use correct spelling and grammar. You're grammer doesn't need to be perfect, but if you are using words in unnatural ways too often Google may assume you are writing for it and not actual readers.
  • Remember to incorporate your long tailed keyword variations into your writing. If your keyphrase is "web design service", you should not just repeat that over and over. Use "website design service", "web design services", and other variations. This will not only prevent you from accidentally spamming your main keyword, it will help your rankings in other important variations.
  • Avoid repeating yourself. You should have a company or website tagline or slogan that incorporates your main keywords, but other than this be sure to vary the way you say things. Don't repeat sentences just for emphasis, express the same thing in a different way using a keyword variation.
